Who Are You?

Competitive Edge Resume Service was started by me, Joseph Buss, a graduate of the University of Illinois at Chicago. After College, I served active duty Army for six years, leaving at the rank of Staff Sergeant. Since then, I have spent the last 20 years working in Logistics management. I have worked in both manufacturing and distribution environments, and know the Chicago Labor Market well.

How Did You Start Writing Resumes?

For years I have been helping friends, co-workers and people they know with their resumes. As someone who has been a supervisor, I have seen many resumes come across my desk, and I quickly developed a good understanding of which formats work and which ones don't. More importantly, I've seen a lot of the mistakes people commonly make in composing their resumes.

The thing is, most people don't really develop a skill for writing resumes Why should they? It's something you might need once every five years if things are going well.

Several years ago, a good friend of mine asked me to help her with her resume. I realized that I couldn't essentially change the whole thing without hurting her feelings, so I took the time to explain each and every change I made. In the process, I realized that I can use what I have learned over the years to help people in this tough economy.

Do You Have an Office ?

I provide affordable resumes for working people, and I do this by eliminating unnecessary expenses. I don't have an office or a secretary like companies which charge you $300.00 or more for a resume. You really only want to pay for the writing, and that's all I charge you for.

Can You Send Me a Sample Resume So I Can See What Your Work Look Like?

Short answer, No.

Long answer, There are two reasons I don't do this. The first is that any information that was given to me to compose a resume was given with an expectation of confidentiality. The second is that people want to see what works in a resume, but no two resumes are really alike. What worked well for a customer service representative with five years of experience won't work for a IT programmer with ten years. The resume should be customized to both the applicant and the kinds of jobs he or she is looking for.

I am a Recently Discharged Veteran, but I have a hard time relating my service to civilian occupations. What can you do to help me?

Well, first and foremost, thank you for your service.  Secondly,  Yes, having served myself, I know that frequently, putting military service in terms that civilian employers can understand is a major challenge, one that I am happy to meet.  I am able to translate your MOS into its civilian equivalent and emphasize your qualities while also calling attention to the sacrifices you’ve made for our country.
